i've been gaining interest in consumer tech and industrial design recently. i decided to build my own mp3 player and learn the electronics and firmware as i go.

the pcb was designed in kicad and manufactured by jlcpcb. the enclosure was designed in onshape and 3d printed. i liked the idea of having a knob on the side but wanted it to be usable for both right and left handed users, so the main user inputs and display are rotationally symmetric.

a simplification i made was to make the playback bluetooth only. i always use my airpods on the go and love its convenience. using breakout boards also greatly simplified this project, but i hope to learn how to design my boards from scratch in the future.

specs:

  • adafruit feather v2 (esp32)
  • adafruit microsd reader breakout
  • 2000mah lipo battery
  • 3.7in epaper display (GDEY037T03)
  • despi-c02 display driver board
  • ec12e rotary encoder
  • b3f-1020 tactile switch
  • ec1218 slide switch
